"Futura" is located at the transept of the right choir (right ear) in the « CdV » - The solo exhibition of Chia-En Jao at Taipei fine art museum. This 4 minutes and 35 seconds video projection installation narrates a story using illustrations from "Le Monde Illustré" and "Le Voleur Illustré" magazines, as well as music composed by De Buxeuil René. The lyrics of René's music are presented in imagery using the font "Futura," designed by Paul Renner in 1927, with translations in Chinese and English. All three musical segments were re-sung and recorded by vocalists and percussionists.

The narrative of the artwork begins with an illustration and singing scene of the Khoikhoi people (les hottentos) performing in Paris, as reported in the "Le Voleur Illustré" magazine in 1888. The second segment features De Buxeuil René's 1922 composition "Tananarive, Le Fétiche de Paris," where Tananarive refers to both the capital of Madagascar and the name of a prostitute in the song. The lyrics metaphorically liken the selling of her monkey to prostitution, and Tananarive is associated with a Parisian "fétiche" (idol) in the song.
The video consists of two parts: a) digitally sampled and edited blocks of colors representing colonial empire flags, which use projected light to color the space, and b) 22 authorized photographic images from the Lao Dao'er Collection, inserted into the singing performers' breathing segments.

Note 1: De Buxeuil René was a French composer born in 1881 who lost his sight at the age of 11. He was skilled in using puns in his music, and his songs often reflected current events and politics.
Note 2: Tananarive is the former name of Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar. In the song, it refers to the name of a prostitute, and the lyrics metaphorically associate her with selling her monkey as a reference to prostitution, equating Tananarive with a Parisian "fétiche" (idol or fetish).
Note 3: "Fétiche" originally referred to African idols believed to have divine power, used in rituals and ceremonies.
Note 4: Jardin d’acclimatation, located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, was initially a place for exhibiting and acclimatizing plants and animals from the colonies to the local climate. Today, the Louis Vuitton Foundation is also situated in this area.

《Futura》在台北市立美術館的 « CdV » - 饒加恩個展中，位於右耳堂禮拜堂的位置。這件總長4分35秒錄像投影裝置，是由世界報雜誌（Le Monde Illustré）、賊報雜誌（Le Voleur Illustré）中的插畫樂譜以及De Buxeuil René （註ㄧ）的樂曲構成敘事，René的樂曲歌詞則以Paul Renner於1927年設計的字體Futura（圖三）作為影像，以中文與英文翻譯。三段音樂都由聲樂家與打擊樂手重新翻唱與錄製。

作品的敘事從1888年賊報雜誌（圖一）報導科伊科伊人(les hottentos)在巴黎表演的插畫清唱樂句開始，第二段為De Buxeuil René於1922年的作曲Tananarive, Le Fétiche de Paris（註二），第三段為演1887年阿散蒂人在巴黎環境適應公園（les achantis au jardin d'acclimatation）的插畫樂曲（圖二、註四）。在影像方面則以兩個部分構成：a. 由殖民帝國的旗幟數位螢幕採樣編輯而成色塊，透過投影的光將空間染色，b. 勞道爾收藏授權使用的22張攝影影像，安插在演唱者換氣片段。

註ㄧ：De Buxeuil René是一位法國作曲家，生於1881年11歲的時失去視覺，他擅長使用雙關語，且歌曲經常反應時事與政治。
註二：Tananarive是馬達加斯加的首都名，在歌曲中則是一位妓女的名字，歌曲中將賣春比喻賣她的小猴子，並將Tananarive等同於巴黎的神靈物（fétiche)。
註三：fétiche 原指具有神力的非洲神像，用於儀式與祭典中
註四：Jardin d’acclimatation位於巴黎16區，當初作為展會與殖民地的動植物適應當地氣候的地點。今日Louis Vuitton Foundation也位於此區域。

AU JARDIN D'ACCLIMATATION

Notre dessinateur s'est attaché à reproduire, avec les types les plus curieux des Hottentots, les scènes qui obtiennent le plus de succès auprès du public qui se presse tous les jours au Jardin d'acclimatation. Nous donnons aussi les airs guerriers et religieux que les Hottentots chantent à certaines heures de la journée.

Our illustrator endeavored to reproduce, using the most curious types of Hottentots, the scenes that garner the most success with the public who flock to the Jardin d'Acclimatation every day. We also provide the warlike and religious tunes that the Hottentots sing at certain times of the day.

Le Jardin zoologique d'acclimatation de Paris, continuant la série des exhibitions ethnographiques qui font le désespoir de M. Champimont (voir le Par-ci par-là du n° 1623), présente à ses visiteurs une caravane du plus haut intérêt, composée de quatorze Hottentots (7 hommes, 5 femmes et 2 enfants).

The Zoological Acclimatization Garden of Paris, continuing the series of ethnographic exhibitions that cause despair for Mr. Champimont (see the Here and There from Issue 1623), presents to its visitors a caravan of the highest interest, composed of fourteen Hottentots (7 men, 5 women, and 2 children).

Le nom de Hottentots est donné à tous les indigènes de la partie méridionale de l'Afrique, située à l'est et dans le nord de la Cafrerie. Il vient, dit-on, d'un mot que les naturels prononcent souvent dans leur langue, mais ils se connaissent entre eux sous le nom de Quaiguœ.

The name Hottentots is given to all the natives of the southern part of Africa, situated to the east and north of the Cape Colony. It is said to come from a word that the natives often pronounce in their language, but they know each other by the name Quaiguœ.

Le territoire occupé par la colonie anglaise du Cap, a été, pied, à pied, enlevé aux Hot-tentots. Le nombre de ces naturels diminue de jour en jour, et les quelques familles qui ont su conserver encore leur indépendance vivent réfugiées aux environs de Graaf-Reynet. Elles sont pauvres et misérables. Le sort des esclaves est encore préférable au leur, car leur vie n'est qu'une longue série de privations.

The territory occupied by the English colony of the Cape was gradually taken away from the Hottentots. The number of these natives diminishes day by day, and the few families that have managed to maintain their independence still live in refuge around Graaf-Reinet. They are poor and miserable. The fate of the slaves is even preferable to theirs, as their life is but a long series of privations.

Les Hottentots ont la coutume de ne jamais se marier en dehors de leurs Kraals, ou villages, de sorte que chaque famille forme comme une horde séparée. Avant longtemps, la misère aidant, les Hottentots libres auront complètement disparu.

The Hottentots have the custom of never marrying outside their Kraals, or villages, so that each family forms a separate horde. Before long, with misery's assistance, the free Hottentots will have completely disappeared.

Le type des Hottentots est un des plus dégradés de l'espèce humaine. Les traits du visage sont très caracté-ristiques. La face est large en haut, presque pointue en bas, les pommettes très saillantes, les mâchoires étroites.

The Hottentot type is one of the most degraded in the human species. The facial features are very characteristic. The face is broad at the top, almost pointed at the bottom, with prominent cheekbones and narrow jaws.

Le nez est aplati, la bouche démesurément grande, la chevelure laineuse et courte. La couleur de la peau est d'un jaune caractéristique.

The nose is flattened, the mouth disproportionately large, the hair woolly and short. The skin color is a characteristic yellow.

Les hommes n'ont que peu de barbe; leurs membres sont grêles, l'ensemble de leur structure n'annonce pas la force.

The men have little facial hair; their limbs are slender, and their overall structure doesn't suggest strength.

Les femmes sont ordinairement petites et délicates, leurs seins sont longs et pendants. L'ampleur particulière de leur... « bas du dos » est absolument remarquable. Le moulage existant dans les collections anthropologiques du Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Paris, et représentant la femme désignée communément sous le nom de « Vénus hottentote, » montre quelles singulières proportions peuvent prendre les parties charnues dans les femmes de cette race.

Women are usually small and delicate, their breasts are long and drooping. The particular size of their "lower back" is absolutely remarkable. The cast in the anthropological collections of the Museum of Natural History in Paris, representing the woman commonly referred to as the "Hottentot Venus," shows the peculiar proportions that the fleshy parts can take in women of this race.

Les hommes, vêtus d'un baudrier de peau, ont de plus une sorte de pagne attaché sur les reins; ils ajoutent à ce costume rudimentaire, des bracelets de cuivre ou de graines.

The men, dressed in a leather harness, also have a kind of loincloth tied around their hips; they add copper or seed bracelets to this rudimentary attire.

Les femmes sont nues jusqu'à la ceinture; leur coquetterie est grande; leur cou et leur poitrine sont généralement couverts de colliers et de verroterie. Elles portent un petit tablier, et sur les reins, une peau qui descend jusqu'aux mollets.

Women are naked up to the waist; their coquetry is significant; their neck and chest are generally covered in necklaces and beads. They wear a small apron and a skin that descends to the calves on their hips.

Les Hottentots se servent de l'arc. Leurs flèches sont généralement empoisonnées.

The Hottentots use bows. Their arrows are generally poisoned.

Ces populations n'adorent point de dieux; elles ont une sorte de culte pour leurs « saints, » c'est-à-dire pour ceux d'entre eux qui se distinguent par leurs vertus.

These populations do not worship gods; they have a kind of cult for their "saints," meaning those among them who stand out for their virtues.

Comme tous les sauvages, ces indigènes n'ont pas la notion du temps et ne connaissent généralement pas leur âge.

Like all savages, these natives lack the notion of time and generally do not know their age.

Les Hottentots camperont au Jardin zoologique d'acclimata-tion jusqu'au 30 septembre 1888. Ils ne peuvent manquer d'exciter au plus haut point, la curiosité des Parisiens.

The Hottentots will camp at the Zoological Acclimatization Garden until September 30, 1888. They are bound to arouse the curiosity of the Parisians to the highest degree.
